Please be aware that the sponsorship
structure is currently under review and will in all likelihood be amended for
the 09-10 race.
Clipper 09-10
Round the World Yacht Race is a major global event with a public exposure that
lasts in excess of 18 months. Over 200 million people in 202 countries followed
Clipper 05-06 which had a calculated media value in excess of the $70 million.
These figures will show another marked increase for Clipper 07-08, and 09-10.
This interest and publicity generates a direct benefit to all those that are
involved in any kind of sponsorship in the Clipper Race.
In previous races
an additional form of involvement has been encouraged in order to assist some
potential crew members to take part. This has now been
formalised under the heading of Clipper Crew Sponsorship and is designed
so that sponsors can have an active association with the Clipper 09-10 race
through sponsoring a crew member.
The aim of crew
sponsorship is to enable a variety of crew members to participate who would not
normally have had the opportunity. To these individuals, it will enable them to
achieve what might otherwise be impossible dream. They will realise their full
potential and, above all, bring back added values and energy into their parent
communities and associations.
There are two
distinct avenues that can be followed by those wishing to sponsor a crew member
but first it is Important to see how this sponsorship fits into the larger
picture.
CLIPPER
SPONSORSHIP FRAMEWORK
Sponsorship for
Clipper 09-10 is layered in the following manner:
• Primary sponsorship is directed towards
the Cities that give their names to the ten race yachts.
• Secondary sponsorship from companies and
organisations that support the cities and are known as Race Partners
• In addition, selected companies that
supply equipment or services are included and known as Equipment Sponsors
All the above
sponsors have contracts so that their support is balanced by an agreed package
of benefits. Branding on the boat, clothing, use of the Race logo and a
presence ashore are major parts of these packages. In fairness to these
sponsors all these areas are tightly controlled.
REASONS FOR
SPONSORING CREW MEMBERS
The following
table shows the different reasons for sponsoring crew members
|
Crew Places
for Employees |
Sponsors use
the benefits of the race by selecting and supporting an employee to take
part. This acts as a strong Personal Development Programme for the individual
as well as creating a lively interest and following within the company. |
|
Crew Places
for a Community |
• Sponsors can use this as a means of
sponsorship by supporting a worthy candidate from the community. • Appropriate candidates may be
suggested by the sponsor or be recommended by Clipper or the Sponsoring
Cities. • Candidates may come from youth
organisations, clubs or any other organisations where it is considered the
crew member will take something positive back into the community. • It is worth considering selecting youth
leaders or instructors that are involved in such organisations. Note: The
minimum age for taking part in the Clipper Race is 18 |
|
Crew Places
for Private Individuals |
Some crew
members make private approaches for sponsorship to organisations and individuals.
Their reasons for sponsorship may be varied but in most cases the potential
sponsor will wish to have some recognition and involvement. This scheme
enables the crew member to offer an agreed package of benefits in return for
sponsorship. |
|
Crew Places
for Third Parties |
Sponsors may
wish to have a close association with the race by supporting a crew member
for other reasons that fall outside the above categories. These will be taken
on an individual basis and Clipper Ventures will give advice where required. |
BENEFITS
Benefits to all parties
involved commence when crew members start their selection and training. It then
continues throughout the race, peaking as their sponsored crew members join the
race. This could be a period well in excess of a year.
WARNING: Involvement in the
race, either first hand or by association, is infectious! One of the many
attractions is that, with the lovely mix of individuals involved, the race is
rich in stories of personal endeavours and interest. With the benefit of modern
communication these can easily be shared by a large number of enthusiastic
followers.
THE CREW SPONSORSHIP
SCHEME
With this scheme companies,
organisations and individuals are able to be involved in sponsorship by
supporting individual crew members. There are two main ways this can be
achieved:
Crew Partner Sponsorship
This scheme is where a
company, organisation or individual has an agreement with Clipper Ventures to
become an official sponsor, with a defined list of benefits, knowing that a
very large proportion of the cost of the sponsorship will be covering a
specific crew member.
Private Crew Sponsorship
Private sponsorship of a crew
member is when a company, organisation or individual decides to sponsor a crew
member directly for a sum agreed between the two parties. In this case Clipper
Ventures is not involved. The list of benefits the crew member can offer is
correspondingly limited.
The Table below summaries the
two sponsorship packages:
